Gift is gritty. Gift is vulnerable. Gift is real.

Gift began as a melody in my head while walking home one autumn night in Boston having closed the door on a very tempting connection. It's a truly vulnerable song, exploring acceptance, shame, and gratitude for the feelings others inspire in us, even when we cannot act on them. Visuals of Hurricane Katrina aftermath footage were in my mind, which inspired the song's context of a greater maelstrom and the erosion of time. It emphasises the affirmation to hold on tight to the core of what we know to be true and constant and worthy.

Mark kept the production minimal and natural on this one. It's only me on piano, bass, and vocals, and Mark adding in a bit of synth pad as the track progresses. Yet his work is so present when I listen.

I love the arrangement of the backing vocals that he did. When he sent them back to me, I saw the shimmering ripples on the surface of the ocean that you can see from high up. There is a specific word in Hawaiian for this exact effect, hulali maybe? and that is what I could see.

It was also Mark's idea that I should add some treble piano broken chords at certain points in the song to build it. So even with minimal production, this song would be much different without him.

Gift stretches a canvas to paint on, as Mark's production and the layers of instrumentation will definitely hit the super colourful end of the spectrum in some of the songs we've created!
